Advance Placement (AP) Courses

What is AP?

The Advanced Placement (AP) program makes college and university courses available for students to take while they’re still in secondary school.

Courses offered in this program are administered by the College Board which is recognized for advanced credit or placement in many Canadian and American universities and colleges.

AP courses are granted credit through the External Credential program and may be used towards district and provincial scholarships.

Reasons to Take AP:

Taking AP classes and exams will help students:

  Build skills and confidence.

  • AP students learn essential time management, critical thinking, and study skills needed for university and career success.

  • They dig deeper into subjects that interest them and learn to tap their creativity and their problem-solving skills to address course challenges.

  • Studying a subject in depth could give you new insights and even put you on the path to a career.

  • Get familiar with university-level course work—and boost your confidence by tackling it.

  Get into university.

  • “AP” on your high school transcript shows universities you're motivated to succeed, and taking the exam demonstrates your commitment to tackle and complete higher-level work.

  • Students who take AP courses send a signal to colleges that they’re serious about their education and that they’re willing to challenge themselves with rigorous coursework.

  • 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.

  Succeed in university.

  • Research consistently shows that AP students are better prepared for university than students who don’t take AP, regardless of their exam score. They’re more likely to enroll and stay in university, do well in their classes, and graduate in four years.

  • Time management, critical thinking, scholarly writing—AP courses and exams help you hone the skills you’ll need in post-secondary and career.

  • Earning university credit with AP can give you the flexibility to change majors, pursue a second degree, study abroad, or seek internships.

  • Research shows that students who receive a score of 2 on their AP Exams are ready for university work.

  • Research shows that students who receive a score of 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience greater academic success in university and have higher graduation rates than their non-AP peers.

Save time and money in university.

  • Your AP score could earn you credits before you even set foot on campus. In fact, most AP students who enroll in four-year university programs start with some credit.

  • Earning credit or placement can open up time on your schedule or even let you graduate early.

  • Research shows that students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely than their peers to complete a university degree on time. This means they avoid paying for a fifth year of tuition.
